I had the privilege of working with Denston on a film documenting the Namma Yatri Mahila Shakti electric auto driving training program, an initiative that is deeply personal and close to my heart. Working with Denston was inspiring because he did not treat this as just a shoot. He spent considerable time on the ground, at training centres and even in the homes of the women drivers and trainers, understanding the narrative and the realities behind the program. The Mahila Shakti program is about courage. It takes courage for women to claim the auto driver’s seat in our cities, and even greater conviction to train others and carry that strength forward. Capturing that chain of empowerment truly mattered. One particular moment stays with me. While filming Tabusum, she spoke about the days when she had no money for food and had to sell household belongings to manage debt. Mahila Shakti transformed her life. Through auto driving, she rebuilt stability and reclaimed dignity. Denston captured that transformation with sensitivity and respect. He has a rare ability to help non-actors feel safe enough to be truthful. The women auto drivers were not performing for the camera. They were sharing lived realities. Denston ensured those stories emerged with honesty and strength. When the leadership watched the final video, they were deeply moved by the power of the narrative. The technical quality of the film was equally thoughtful and well executed. Namma Yatri’s leadership went on to use the video across multiple events and forums to showcase the impact of the program. The women auto drivers themselves had tears in their eyes when they watched it. They felt the integrity of their story had been protected. Denston does not just create films. He understands movements. And he tells them with heart, clarity, and discipline.
